Numerical Wisdom: A Series About Tarot’s Mysteries by the Digit

,

Why Numbers? Why Now?

I’ve been wanting to start a series on the tarot for a while now and have spent a (extremely) long time deciphering what that would be. At first, I thought I’d combine my love of literature with some significant cards in the RWS tarot. But then I realized it didn’t really fit my current reading schedule. My mind is scattered and I’m very prone to overthinking, so I wrote a bunch of blog ideas I had and decided to keep it simple.

“Let’s stick to the basics. Let’s talk numbers!”

I have seen different kinds of interpretations across the web on what the tarot numbers are supposed to mean. Sometimes, there are traditional numerology meanings that others tie into the tarot card’s meanings, which at times is disconnected to the actual signification of both tarot and the numerology. Other times, I see personal experiences color the interpretation, which is fine but can often stray from the context of the card meaning. All in all, I don’t really see a comprehensive dive on the meaning of each of the numbers for the tarot’s day-to-day arcana.

Where I’m coming from

I’ll admit, I am not a numerologist. Numerology is not my specialty, nor is it my preferred way of divining. I’m just like most people; attracted to pretty colors and images on cardstock. But I won’t deny that numbers have divine wisdom. I bet you know that, too.

Do you every look at your grocery receipt, notice that the total is 111.11, and think “is this a sign”? We as a collective have enough new age knowledge to notice the intelligence of numbers in our lives, and diviners are no different. When I pull cards for a spread, I start to look for patterns, and numbers tend to be the first one I look out for. Numbers tell us where we are on our life’s journey and understanding them can be a step forward to better understanding ourselves. I think we all stand to benefit from uncovering extra layers from our readings, and I hope this series can show you how.

“What am I in for?”

I plan to cover the Rider-Waite Smith’s version of the minor arcana. RWS is the standard, and other tarot systems (like the Thoth and Marseilles) offer different interpretations that carry similar but differently rich meanings. Numerology, historical references, image interpretation, and small overview on each minor arcana suit are what I plan to cover for each number in this series.

I don’t really have a timeline for this sort of thing, but I plan to post every couple weeks or so. My life is unpredictable, and I will be following its flow and not the other way around. I will say that you can expect the first post some time next week, where we’ll dive into the Aces.
